Buccaneers make last minute transactions ahead of season opener

In an unexpected move Saturday the Buccaneers front office made changes in both the secondary and the receiving corps. WR Louis Murphy (#11) and CB Quinton Pointer (#26) were both cut, making room for WR Solomon Patton (#86) and CB Brandon Dixon.

The promotion of Patton to the active roster was long-anticipated since his cut and subsequent signing to the practice squad as he was an assumed shoe-in for the kick and punt return job. He excelled in those positions ahead of anyone else on the team due to his speed and tenacity. It is surprising that his move to the active roster did not happen sooner.

Murphy was on the injury report due to a back injury, which kept him out of practice all week.

Dixon was signed to the practice squad on September 1 after being drafted in the 6th round by the Jets. Dixon was released by the Jets on August 30.

Pointer was backup to CB Leonard Johnson (#29) in the nickleback position. The position is expected to see some playing time on Sunday due to CB Mike Jenkins (#24) not being 100% after returning from injury.
